Junior School LRC

By Mrs Tyrrell Johnson (LRC Manager)

Over the summer term, schools, youth centres and libraries across the country will come together to celebrate the Carnegie Medal. Established in 1936 it is the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book award. Judged by children’s librarians, it highlights exceptional literature and outstanding illustrators.

In recognition of the Carnegie Award for Illustration, the Junior School Library, under the supervision of Mrs Wright (LRC Assistant), will be exploring with the girls our Carnegie Illustrated 2025 shortlist, as part of our lunchtime library sessions.

Assisted by our Year 10 Library helpers, Sara Asei and Star Osemwegie, our Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteer, we will be reading, exploring and discussing our Carnegie 2025 picture books recognised for their outstanding artwork, and the relationship between illustration and text in the communication of ideas, themes and emotions. The girls will be invited to vote for their favourite title, and our results can be compared with last year’s official results. We look forward to the girls discussing this experience with you at home.

Lunchtime library sessions offer an invaluable opportunity for girls to spend time in the library outside their lessons, explore themes and projects as well as a space to curl-up with their favourite book, whilst interacting with our senior schoolgirls who offer mentorship, guidance and friendship.

If you wish to know more about the Carnegie Awards and how we promote the event here at BGS please do speak to Mrs Wright or me, we would love to hear from you.
