By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 5)

As part of our How We Express Ourselves inquiry, Year 5 have started the Design Technology phase of their learning by transforming their historical research into symbolic mask designs.

Inspired by performance traditions from cultures around the world, the girls are discovering that masks are much more than decorative objects, they communicate ideas, feelings and identity. Before beginning their final papier-mâché masks, they have explored historical evidence and are developing prototypes before refining their designs and considering how an audience might interpret their work.

Every design choice is purposeful, drawing on their inquiry into performance, symbolism and culture. By following the Design Cycle, the girls are learning that great designers don't simply make, they research, test, refine and improve.

We look forward to sharing their finished masks as part of our final inquiry exhibition, where each piece will tell a unique story through thoughtful design and historical inspiration.
