Junior School Trips and Excursions

By Mrs Inkson (Head of Year 6)

Year 6 recently enjoyed a fantastic residential visit to Preston Montford Field Studies Centre. Despite the unusually high temperatures, we had a wonderful time. Thankfully, there was plenty of shade across the site and a gentle breeze, and activities were carefully adapted throughout the week to ensure everyone stayed safe and comfortable.

The girls took part in a wide range of exciting activities, including team-building challenges, orienteering to develop their map-reading skills, invertebrate hunts, pond dipping, shelter building and fire lighting. One particular favourite was the challenge of filling a drainpipe full of holes with water, a task that required plenty of teamwork and determination! They also carried out science investigations, testing which materials would make the best nesting material for small mammals.

A real highlight of the trip was setting small mammal traps. The girls carefully prepared them as cosy mini hotels for any mice or voles that might visit overnight. We were delighted to discover four common field voles in the morning, clearly attracted by the food provided! After observing them carefully, we released them safely back into the long grass where they live.

Competitive water games helped us cool down, with pupils and teachers alike joining in the fun, along with plenty of ice pops. The excellent food at the centre was another highlight. Every meal was freshly prepared, with hearty cooked breakfasts providing plenty of energy for the day ahead. Evening meals included favourites such as fresh tomato pasta and fish and chips, while the well-stocked salad bar ensured there was something for everyone. The quality and variety of the food were excellent throughout our stay.

The trip was a wonderful opportunity for the year group to spend time together and create lasting memories before moving on to their next adventures in Year 7.
