Mrs Tyrrell Johnson (LRC Manager)

As part of our BGS Book Shadowers Group, we are excited to offer students the opportunity to take part in one of the UK’s most prestigious children’s book awards. The Carnegie Medal is the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book award, established in 1936 to recognise outstanding writing for children and young people. Judged by children’s librarians, it highlights exceptional literature and outstanding illustrators.

This year’s writing shortlist comprises eight exceptional examples of YA fiction. Each title has been added to the Learning & Resources Centre, to be enjoyed by our Senior and Junior School students.

In addition to the Judges’ award, the Carnegies offer readers an opportunity to critique and vote for their favourite title, in the form of a Book Shadowers Group. As a member of the BGS Shadowers Group, you will be asked to read and review four or more of the shortlisted titles.

This year the judges have selected a large proportion of titles suitable for under 13s, making it a wonderful opportunity for our Year 7 and Year 8 students to take part. House Points will be awarded for each activity and, on completion of the event on 23 June, each participant will receive a Carnegie Book Shadowers certificate.

Benefits of the Book Shadowers reading scheme include the introduction of new genres and authors, improving readers’ vocabulary, critical skills and writing style. In addition, this is an experience that can contribute to a student’s future personal statement or CV.

Anyone interested in taking part in this prestigious event should speak to a member of the Library team, who will be delighted to register them and guide them on their reading journey.
