On Wednesday morning, our Year 11 GCSE Religious Studies students enjoyed an enriching visit to St Paul's Church, gaining a deeper understanding of Christian beliefs, practices and the role of the Church within the local community.
We were warmly welcomed by Reverend Davis, whose friendly and engaging manner immediately set the tone for the visit. His openness encouraged students to feel comfortable asking questions and fully immersing themselves in the experience.
For many students, it was particularly meaningful to revisit the church where we gather each year for our Christmas service. However, this visit offered something far more personal, allowing students to explore the building in greater depth.
Students enjoyed an insightful visit to the church, learning about its history and importance within Bedford, including the remarkable fact that it is the second largest church in the Bedfordshire St Albans diocese. This helped them appreciate the church not only as a place of worship but also as an important community landmark.
Throughout the visit, students showed curiosity and confidence, asking thoughtful questions about the church and Reverend Davis’ role. They were particularly engaged by the Harpur Window, depicting William and Alice Harpur, and its connection to the town and our school’s heritage. A highlight was behind-the-scenes access to the vestry, where Reverend Davis explained service preparations and shared historic items. Students were also intrigued to learn that a covert radio station once operated from the church during the Second World War.
The visit was clearly valued by students. Caitlin H commented: “It was a very educational experience and enjoyable. Particularly the interactive aspect as we were not passive and this helped us with concentration and learning so much.”
Felicity R added: “This was a helpful visit that helped me expand my knowledge of the subject and brought to life a lot of what I learned in the classroom.”
Overall, the trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to bring their learning to life, deepen their understanding, and engage thoughtfully with key religious concepts in a real-world setting.
