A Love of Reading

By Mrs Woodhouse (English Coordinator)

At the Junior School, fostering a love of reading sits at the heart of our English curriculum. Initiatives such as Term End Tales play a key role in this, giving pupils dedicated time to simply enjoy books.

On Thursday afternoon we had our first Term End Tales event where each pupil was asked to bring in a book to read and be ready to discuss one that has made a lasting impact on them. They were encouraged to bring in a small cushion too to create that cosy environment. During this whole-school event, everything pauses as children settle down with a book of their choice, sharing recommendations and reading alongside their peers.

This relaxed, communal experience helps to build positive reading habits and reminds pupils that reading is not just a skill to be taught, but a lifelong source of enjoyment.

Alongside our carefully planned English curriculum and progression in reading skills, experiences like these help nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who choose to read for pleasure.
