This week, the Junior School has enjoyed celebrating Maths Week England. Each morning break, pupils took part in a range of Maths games and activities inside and out on the playground, supported by our Sixth Form helpers. It was lovely to see collaboration across the year groups, with older pupils encouraging younger learners.
The theme this year was Connections or Coincidence, and every year group explored mathematical ideas through a variety of tasks and lessons.
Year 3 linked their Inquiry work on beliefs and values to symmetry and geometry in Islamic art, discovering the connections between art and Maths. During rehearsals for their Christmas performance, they explored how counting, patterns, rhythm and timing support music. Year 4 continued with the theme of games, using dominoes to explore multiplication.
Year 5 created Factor Flowers to explore factors, multiples and prime numbers. They also took part in a Square Number City investigation, building square structures with cubes, calculating areas and perimeters, and creating labelled maps to spot number patterns.
Year 6 completed a series of problem solving activities that encouraged careful thinking and teamwork. Ruby said: “One of these I really enjoyed was trying to solve the stick problem as there was a twist as you had to think inside the box instead of outside the box.”
Across the Junior School, pupils were encouraged to see that Maths is not only learned in lessons but found in many parts of daily life. Through outdoor games, creative tasks and group activities, they experienced the enjoyment that Maths can bring.
