Junior School

By Miss Alarcon (Year 4 Teacher)

Year 4 recently enjoyed a memorable science experience when BGS parent, automotive journalist and TV presenter, Rory Reid, visited the school with his electric Microlino bubble car.

The girls gathered around the Microlino with interest, noticing that its door opens from the front rather than the side. This unusual design prompted thoughtful questions and discussion, with pupils confidently sharing their existing knowledge of forces, aerodynamics, racing cars and how design choices influence movement and safety.

As Mr Reid explained how the Microlino works, the girls developed their understanding of key scientific concepts including forces, friction, tyre grip, magnets and how technological advances enable engineers to design different types of vehicles. Seeing these ideas applied to a real car helped to make the learning feel purposeful and relevant.

A highlight of the session came when a small number of pupils were invited to sit inside the Microlino and experience what it is like to be a passenger in such a compact vehicle. The visit concluded as Mr Reid drove the Microlino away, with the girls watching closely as it moved along the road.

Reflecting on the experience, Charlotte P (4A) said: “I was inspired and now I want to learn more at home.”
