Spelling with Confidence

Junior School

By Mrs Woodhouse (Year 5 Teacher)

Spelling has always been a key part of learning in the Junior School, but this year pupils are engaging with it in a way that is more active and motivating. Alongside dedicated spelling lessons in class, the spelling games on the new platform we adopted in September and rolled out for home use this term have become a popular part of practice time, both in school and at home.

Gamification in education is known to improve working memory and motivation in learners. The spelling games are fast-paced, clear and rewarding. They encourage pupils to have another go, notice patterns and improve their accuracy without it feeling like repetition. Many children choose to replay games independently, keen to beat their previous score or move up a level. This extra practice makes a real difference.

Teachers and parents are seeing pupils approach spelling with greater confidence. Children are more willing to attempt tricky words, talk about sounds and spelling choices, and apply what they’ve practised in their writing. For some, the games provide a low-stakes way to revisit learning; for others, they offer just the right level of challenge.

Overall, attitudes to learning spelling patterns feels more positive. It is purposeful, engaging and something pupils enjoy returning to. When children want to practise, progress tends to follow.
