Year 8 are diving into the wonderful world of Unsung Mathematical heroes this term, exploring the brilliant minds whose ideas quietly shape our modern lives.

From pioneers of computer science to trailblazers working on cutting-edge discoveries today, our students will shine a spotlight on mathematicians who deserve far more recognition. With full creative freedom, students can choose any format they fancy, whether that’s a colourful poster, an imaginative diorama, a catchy song, or even a short play that brings their chosen “Mathe-magician” to life.

The excitement is already building as students select their mathematician in lessons and begin crafting presentations, which are due the week beginning 9th February. Chosen figures include Dr Hannah Fry, Cambridge Professor known for her work making maths accessible; Alan Turing, pioneer of modern computing and codebreaker during World War II; Maryam Mirzakhani, the first female Fields Medal winner; and Shakuntala Devi, famously known as the human computer.

This project encourages mathematical curiosity while highlighting creativity, collaboration and the enjoyment of discovering new ideas. We look forward to seeing the thoughtful and imaginative ways our Year 8s share the stories of these figures who make the world a more Mathemagical place.

Abhinaya (Year 8) said: “I’m so glad I chose Eugenia Cheng! She’s really interesting and makes maths so fun and easy to understand.”

Sophia O (Year 8) said: “I picked Katharine Johnson! My mum and I watched a movie about her and space, and I wanted to learn more. She worked for NASA.”
