Year 5 students have been enthusiastically developing their map skills as part of our Unit of Inquiry Where We Are in Place and Time. With clipboards in hand and curiosity at the ready, they’ve dived into the world of Ordnance Survey symbols, compass directions, and the features that help us understand and represent places.
There was a real buzz of excitement as the girls began designing their own maps, applying what they’d learned to create imaginative, detailed landscapes that were both creative and geographically accurate. They’ve particularly enjoyed mastering the use of a compass rose and decoding the language of maps, which has added a new layer of meaning to their walks, stories, and artwork.
This hands-on learning is not only developing practical geography skills, but sparking thoughtful conversations about how we find our way in the world, and how we choose to represent the places that matter to us.
