Five Ways to Wellbeing

Mrs Thomas (Junior School Teacher)

On Friday 10th September, the Junior School gathered together in the Randle Hall for a very special assembly all about the Five Ways to Wellbeing

Through interactive activities, props and discussions, pupils explored the five simple daily habits that can help us all to feel our best: Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning, and Give. Each of these “ways” was brought to life with real examples and props - a pair of trainers for Be Active, a magnifying glass for Take Notice, and a pocket hug heart for Give. The girls had great fun guessing the meaning of each item and joining in the discussions.

We also learned about the science behind wellbeing and how small, everyday actions can change the way our brains and bodies feel. Pupils discovered that moving our bodies can release endorphins (natural mood-boosters), that showing kindness produces serotonin (the “happy chemical”), and that connecting with others increases oxytocin, which helps us feel safe and supported.

Everyone particularly enjoyed sharing their own ideas for how to practise the five ways at school and at home, from making new friends in the playground to noticing nature on the walk to school. Together, we tried out a short mindfulness pause to experience the benefits for ourselves.

We ended the assembly with an inspiring video and a lively pop song to remind us that wellbeing can be fun as well as important! All students left the hall with a stronger sense of what wellbeing means and, most importantly, with practical skills they can use every day whether it’s making a new connection, noticing the small things, or offering kindness to others.

It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions from everyone, and we look forward to continuing to explore these wellbeing strategies across the school community in the weeks ahead.
