By Mrs Inkson (Head of Year 6)
Last week, Year 6 enjoyed two fantastic parent‑led talks that deepened their understanding of different world religions and complemented their recent trip to Faith in Queens Park.
Early in the week, Ms Hurtig visited to share her knowledge and experience of Judaism, giving the children a fascinating insight into Jewish beliefs, customs and traditions. Pupils were especially excited to handle a range of Jewish artefacts, including a Passover seder plate, a menorah, and several dreidels, which helped bring the learning to life. Ms Hurtig explained the meaning behind these items and how they are used during important festivals such as Passover and Hanukkah. The children were also interested to learn about the variety of foods associated with different Jewish celebrations, some of which sounded delicious, and others a little less tempting!
On Friday 6th March, Mr Danam came in to talk about Hinduism and what it means to be Hindu. The pupils learned about key Hindu beliefs and festivals, many of which also involve special foods, a similarity they quickly spotted when comparing with Judaism. They were particularly intrigued by the Kumbh Mela, the major Hindu pilgrimage held every twelve years, which sounded both extraordinary and incredibly busy. The session helped broaden their understanding of how different religions celebrate, worship and come together as a community.
Both of these wonderful talks supported the learning from the recent trip to Queens Park, where Year 6 explored Islam, Sikhism and Christianity through visits to a mosque, gurdwara and church. Together, these experiences have given the children a rich, meaningful insight into the diversity of faiths within our community and beyond.
