By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 5)
On Monday, Year 5 launched their new Unit of Inquiry “Where We Are in Place and Time” with an immersive field trip. Dropped at the historic Willington Dovecote and Stables, the girls became explorers for the afternoon, tasked with navigating their way back to school without modern technology.
Each pupil had packed a small rucksack filled with thoughtful items they imagined a historical explorer might carry, from family compasses and personalised maps to telescopes and binoculars. We were so impressed by the creativity, practicality, and care that went into these choices, which sparked rich discussions and problem-solving on the journey.
As they walked, the girls observed both natural and human-made features, sketched key landmarks, and considered how explorers of the past would have found their way using river routes, tree lines, and the sun. They practised key geographical skills including map reading, compass directions, and field sketching all of which will underpin their learning this term.
A big thank you to Year 5 for embracing the adventure with such imagination and enthusiasm!
