Junior School

By Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)

In DT, Year 5 extended their creative learning by exploring the use of masks in performance throughout history. They then designed and created their own Greek-style masks to represent the characters in their plays, ready to be worn during their performances. With the fantastic sunny weather on our side, we were able to transform our Junior School gardens into an outdoor ‘amphitheatre’, offering a perfect, authentic setting for their final performances.

This has been a wonderful culmination to a busy and creative year in Year 5, and the Year 5 teachers could not be prouder of the imagination, teamwork, and enthusiasm each pupil has shown. A true celebration of storytelling, history and collaboration!

Mary (5BR) commented: "Creating the play was really fun, we got to do everything ourselves from designing the masks to writing the scripts. I was Hercules and we made the script especially funny, adding in our own jokes!"

Grace (5B) added: "Year 5 makes us learn to overcome challenges with the new exciting topics. You will grow with your friendships and learn things along the way."

Immy (5CS) said: “Making the masks was really fun because you get to express different characters and perspectives. It was really fun working in a group because you got to see different ways people work and got to work in a team in drama”

Olive (5W) commented: “This was great fun, especially making the masks as my character needed horns and I didn’t know how to do this but working with my friends, we worked it out and I’m really happy with it. I’m feeling excited and scared about the performance but I know I can do it!”
