Sixth Form Eco and Sustainability

By Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5 and Eco Coordinator)

BGS marked Great Big Green Week with activities led by our Sixth Form GLG Sustainability Prefects, who helped launch the initiative with a Junior School assembly. By introducing the week’s environmental focus to our younger pupils, it set the tone for a week of thoughtful and engaging eco-action.

The team encouraged Junior School pupils to take part in a variety of sustainability-themed clubs and activities throughout the week, including leading a popular seed planting workshop in the school grounds - designed to spark excitement about biodiversity and action they can take to look after the environment. Alongside this, our ever-popular Gen Juice machine offered free juice samples and reusable bottles, reinforcing our whole-school commitment to reducing single-use plastic.

Our GLG team also attended CultureFest on Saturday 28th June, running fun, sustainable activities for pupils and families to enjoy together. It was another fantastic opportunity to celebrate community, creativity, and our ongoing commitment to a greener future.

Ruva (Lower Sixth) reflected on this: “As a part of the new sustainability team I had the opportunity to participate in CultureFest and represent the eco stall. Leading up to the day we planned to sell plant pots and seeds that people could decorate, reusable cups, and free coffee grounds. The ‘make it yourself’ plants in particular were a great way to bloom people’s interest in the environment and also allow them to grow something of their own as well. Although we did manage to sell some pots and cups, our main goal going into the day was to demonstrate what it means to be sustainable in the modern world, and to show them small changes they could make in their lives to help build a more environmentally conscious generation. Going forward I would love to do more events like these to show people that being sustainable doesn’t just mean using less paper but can also be fun activities where everyone can get involved.”
