Last week, our Year 5 girls embraced the great outdoors in an unforgettable overnight residential, filled with adventure, friendship, and fresh air. From the moment the canoes were launched into the river, the excitement was palpable. With paddles in hand, the girls boldly journeyed to their woodland campsite, spotting birds and even a water snake and turtle! Singing songs along the way, the girls bonded through teamwork and resilience.
A well-earned picnic lunch provided a welcome rest before they reached camp in the afternoon. Excitement levels were high as they found their tents, made camp, and set about exploring the woods.
As the sun dipped behind the trees, we gathered around the campfire for a well-earned dinner. Laughter, storytelling, and games with friends filled the twilight hours before the highlight of the evening - s ’mores and hot chocolate before bedtime! Tucked up in tents beneath a canopy of stars, the girls settled down after a full day of activity.
The next morning brought sunshine and birdsong, providing the perfect setting for breakfast in the fresh air. The morning was packed with bushcraft experiences: from building shelters to learning how foraged nettles can be transformed into bracelets. The girls showed curiosity and creativity as they honed their outdoor skills.
After breaking camp, it was time to head home tired but happy. A final picnic stop gave everyone the chance to reflect on their accomplishments before arriving back at school, a little muddy but full of stories and smiles.
It was wonderful to see the girls being risk-takers and stepping outside their comfort zones, connecting with nature, and strengthening friendships. A huge well done to all involved!
Isla (5W) said: “I thought it was really fun – how we canoed ourselves rather than adults doing it for us. I loved sitting around the campfire chatting with my friends and the bushcraft activities were fun too.”
Georgia (5B) commented: “I really enjoyed the camping trip. It was fun to do something out of my comfort zone. My favourite bit of the trip was canoeing even though I was really scared at first. I would love to go on the trip again as it was so enjoyable.”
Esmé (5BR) reflected: “I loved learning about how to camp in the woods and make a nettle bracelet without it stinging us! I have never been in a canoe before so I learnt something new.”
Alice (5CS) “It was really fun going camping. My favourite bit was when we made bracelets out of stinging nettle stems because we had something to keep and take home to remember the trip!”
