Junior School Eco and Sustainability

By Mrs Schofield (Head of Year 4)

As a joyful end to our Active Inquiry unit, the girls showcased their creativity and learning in our much-anticipated Teddy Bear Sustainable Fashion Show.

Tasked with designing an outfit for a specific activity, whether hiking, attending a party, or even saving the world as a superhero, Year 4 used their thinking skills to repurpose materials thoughtfully and choose them for their chosen purpose. With music playing and friends cheering, each bear or bunny strutted down the catwalk in their unique outfits, dancing and celebrating their hard work.

The excitement continued as the girls explored an inspiring gallery of their sustainability posters, highlighting innovative fashion solutions such as Scoby leather and apple leather. Scoby leather is made from a natural by-product of kombucha (a type of tea), which is dried out and turned into a flexible material, a bit like fabric. Apple leather is created from leftover apple peel and pulp, giving fruit waste a new life as a soft and sturdy alternative to traditional leather.

This vibrant event marked a fantastic conclusion to a unit driven by the concept of change, where the girls learned not only about sustainable fashion but also about how materials can be transformed to protect our planet. What a memorable and meaningful way to end a unit of learning!
