On Friday 16th May, our Years 7 and 8 Athletics teams entered the District Athletics at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium.
With 26 schools present, the competition was fierce. The morning saw all the heats on the track and we were thrilled to get so many individuals into the afternoons Finals.
We began strongly with success in the Year 7 Relay. Merrin Harris and Lottie Tillison both reached the 100m final, while Evelyn Howard placed 2nd in the 800m. In Year 8, Regan Rowley-Smith came 8th in the same event, setting a new personal best. Anna Quirighetti also achieved a personal best in the 300m.
In the field events, Evie Hyman and Krystal Sotannde placed 7th in their Long Jump competitions, Hattie Rogers was 6th in the Discus, and Bella Olds placed 4th in the Shot. Georgia Cook was 4th in the High Jump, and Merrin Harris finished 4th in the 100m final.
The Year 7 Relay team came 5th in the final. Izzy Morris took 3rd in the Year 7 Shot, and Lottie Ayers secured 3rd in the Javelin. In the 1500m, Lottie Ayers placed 5th and Pippa Blakemore 2nd. Anna Trueman narrowly missed 1st place in the High Jump, coming 2nd on countback.
We ended the day on a high with two winning performances from Emily Elphick, who won both the Hurdles and Javelin. Her throw of 31.42m in the Javelin also set a new District record, beating the previous best by four metres.
Overall, we placed 2nd in the final girls’ standings, a fantastic result.
Our teams made us proud. The weather was great, and the students couldn’t have done more for each other. It really was a fantastic day of Athletics.
