Senior School Food and Nutrition

By Mrs Lovett (Head of Food and Nutrition)

The Food and Nutrition department recently welcomed local farmer, parent and alumna, Mrs Middleton, who runs Mrs Middleton’s Oil. She spoke with some of our Year 9 students about farming and the environment. The session provided a valuable opportunity for the girls to deepen their understanding of the importance of sustainable practices in modern agriculture, with real life examples.

Mrs Middleton explored a wide range of key topics, including food security, sustainability awards, wildlife corridors, crop rotation, and pest management. She also introduced students to innovative practices such as rainwater collection and discussed important issues like food miles and waste management.

A particular highlight of the session was the opportunity for students to taste a selection of her oils and sauces. They then were given an activity to help them think about which common ingredients are likely to be high or low food miles. Food miles are something a lot of us are aware of, but don’t necessarily make a priority, so it was good to have the reminder.

We are very grateful to Mrs Middleton for giving up her time and sharing her expertise and passion. Experiences like this are invaluable in inspiring our students and deepening their understanding of food, farming, and the environment.
