We are delighted to announce that BGS has once again been ranked as the 8th best all-girls’ independent day schools for sport in the 2025 School Sport Magazine Top 200 Sporting Schools.

This achievement places BGS firmly among the strongest sporting schools in the country and reflects the breadth, depth and quality of our sporting provision, alongside the commitment and ambition of our students. Our students’ talent, drive and love of sport, supported by the dedication of our staff, has shone through. Competing against boys’, girls’, mixed, day and boarding schools from across the country, they’ve shown just how strong our sporting culture is. An all girls environment gives every student the space to take risks, try new challenges and flourish.

Sport at BGS is characterised by high participation and high performance. Students benefit from access to approximately 70 co-curricular sports clubs each week and compete in around 250 fixtures per term, ensuring opportunities for all abilities alongside clear pathways for those performing at regional and national level. Our Athlete Support Programme provides tailored mentoring and support for students competing at the highest levels, enabling them to balance academic success with sporting excellence.

A number of notable team achievements over the past year have contributed to this placing, including:

  • England Hockey U16 Tier 1 Plate Runners-Up, reaching the National Final.
  • U19 ISHC Plate Hockey Champions.
  • U13A and U14A Lacrosse teams finishing in the Top 15 nationally, with further success across older age groups.
  • Strong national progression in netball, badminton and athletics, alongside consistent county and regional representation.
  • Continued success across a wide range of sports including rowing, tennis, swimming, cross country and athletics.

Mrs Mason-McLeod (Director of Sport) commented: “We are extremely proud to be recognised once again among the Top 8 all-girls’ independent day schools for sport. This achievement reflects the commitment of our students, the expertise of our staff and the support of our parent community. At Bedford Girls’ School, we aim to provide outstanding opportunities for every girl, whether she is discovering a new sport or pursuing performance at the highest level.

“Our programme is built on enjoyment, ambition and opportunity. We want every student to develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of physical activity. The continued national recognition of BGS is a testament to the strength of our ethos and the collective effort of everyone involved.

“I would like to thank our PE teaching and coaching staff, parents, and most importantly our talented students, whose enthusiasm continues to drive sport forward at BGS.”
