On Tuesday 10th June, BGS once again came alive with the energy and excitement of Senior School Sports Day, hosted at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium. Despite a mixed forecast of wind, rain and sunshine, the unpredictable weather didn’t dampen spirits. In fact, it seemed to bring out the best in both competitors and supporters alike.
From the very first race, the atmosphere was electric. The sense of House spirit was unmistakable, with students not only cheering passionately from the stands but also offering support to one another throughout the day. It was a joy to witness the camaraderie and encouragement that defines the BGS community.
This year also saw the exciting addition of The Association (PTA), who joined us for the first time and played a brilliant role in supporting the day. With a refreshment stand and the launch of the new BGS Sports Cap, they helped raise valuable funds while adding to the festival-like atmosphere.
A huge thank you must go to maths teacher Mr Hansell-Spain, whose dynamic commentary and well-timed sports day jokes kept the crowd informed and entertained. The smooth running of the event was made possible by the combined efforts of so many staff, from race starters and place judges to timekeepers and enthusiastic cheerleaders in the stands. The PE Department would like to thank everyone involved for their support on the day.
Athletically, the day saw some truly standout performances. Emily Elphick (Junior category) wowed the crowd once again, breaking her own javelin record set in 2024. With an incredible throw of 37.79 metres, over 4 metres further than last year. She further cemented her place as one of BGS’s top athletes.
As always, the day concluded with the much-anticipated final results. Hepburn secured first place in the Junior category, Austen took the top spot in the Intermediate competition and Franklin led the Senior results. Overall, it was Hepburn who claimed first place across the board.
Congratulations to every student who took part, whether competing, supporting, or helping behind the scenes. Your enthusiasm and commitment made the day a huge success. Special congratulations go to Hepburn for claiming the overall title and proving that teamwork and determination truly do pay off.
We look forward to the Junior School Sports Day which takes place on Wednesday 18th June, 12.00pm – 3.34pm.
