By Mr Mason-McLeod (Head of Hockey)
This term has been very successful for Hockey at BGS, with strong participation, good performances, and development across all age groups. With 32 teams taking to the pitch, 17 senior and 15 junior, it has been encouraging to see hockey thriving across the school.
Across eight Saturday fixtures, the players have shown real progress, resilience, and skill. The standard of play has improved during the term, and the results show the effort put in during training and matches. It has been particularly encouraging to see such enthusiasm in the junior school.
BGS has been able to field A to E teams from U10 to U13, as well as a U14C team, showing the depth of talent and giving every student the chance to enjoy competitive hockey, whatever her experience. U8 to U11 teams have also developed well during midweek fixtures, gaining regular match experience and a strong platform to build skills and confidence.
Teams also enjoyed success in East Regional Final tournaments at U11, U12, U13, U14, U16, and U18 levels. The U14 and U18 teams performed well but were narrowly eliminated in the semi-finals, while the U11 IAPS team exited in the cup quarter-finals after some strong performances. The U13s and the 1st Team continue in national cup competitions, and we wish them well for their upcoming matches.
Hockey sessions are still offered at lunchtimes and after school, and all students are encouraged to attend. Local clubs provide further opportunities to play, develop skills, and gain experience outside school. Clubs such as Bedford HC, Milton Keynes HC, Leighton Buzzard HC, Blueharts HC, Cambridge HC, St Neots HC, and Shefford and Sandy HC are all nearby.
Overall, this term has been one of achievement, progress, and enjoyment. The students should be proud of their efforts, and we look forward to building on this next term.
