Junior School Art & Textiles

By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 5)

This week, Year 5 used their artistic exploration as they immersed themselves in the swirling world of Vincent van Gogh. Inspired by his famous painting Starry Night, the girls explored how an artist can use line, texture, and pattern to represent movement, emotion, and energy, ideas that connect beautifully to their Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works.

Through careful observation, the girls noticed how Van Gogh’s curved, directional strokes create a sense of rhythm and motion, almost as if the sky itself were alive. They experimented with these techniques in their own artwork, beginning with a simple landscape and then using colourful, flowing lines to show energy across the foreground, middle ground, and background.

A gallery walk at the end of the session allowed the girls to reflect on which drawings felt most “alive” and why. It was a wonderful reminder that curiosity and creativity go hand in hand, whether exploring the form and movement of the solar system or the expressive power of art.
