A Super Sporting Weekend

Alumnae Community

It was an incredible sporting weekend for our staff and alumnae, who continue to perform at a high level across a range of sports.

Our Head of Netball, Miss Huckle, continues her impressive run of form. Playing for Manchester Thunder in the Netball Super League as Vice-Captain, she helped lead the team to a 69-45 victory over Birmingham Panthers on Sunday. This marks their fourth consecutive win and keeps Thunder firmly in third place in the league table. She is a consistent role model for our students both on and off the court. Her next fixture is against London Pulse this Saturday.

Congratulations also go to our Assistant Director of Sport, Mr Mee, who competed in a HYROX Doubles event in Cardiff on Sunday alongside his nephew. Taking on such a demanding challenge demonstrates commitment, resilience and determination, values we actively encourage in all of our students. Mr Mee sets a strong example through his willingness to push beyond his comfort zone, and we are proud to have role models like him within our school community.

Finally, congratulations to the Bedford Ladies O35s, who travelled to Lee Valley Hockey Centre on Saturday 2nd May to compete in the O35s Cup Final against a well-established Sutton Coldfield side. The squad featured eight members of our community: Mrs Mason-McLeod (née Mason, BHS 2004), Director of Sport; Mrs Tarrant (née Childs), Head of Year 7 and 9; Kate Costin (BHS 2003); SJ McDonald (née Darrington, BHS 2003); Natalia Norford-Reynolds (née Norford, BHS 2001); Rachel Mason (née Jackson, DAHS 2006); and Katherine Winger (née Wood, DAHS 1996) and lastly, Alice Brady-White (née Brady, 2005) who supported the team in a managerial role.

The event was organised by alumna Vicki Sadler (BGS 2019), highlighting the strength and connection within the Bedford hockey community.

Facing a strong Sutton Coldfield side, Bedford anticipated a tough contest. The match was evenly fought, remaining 0–0 after three quarters.

Sutton broke the deadlock to lead 2-0, but Bedford responded in the final 12 minutes. A crucial short corner saw Kate Costin deflect home to make it 2-1.

Bedford pushed hard for an equaliser, creating several chances, but were denied by a series of saves. The match finished 2-1, with Bedford Ladies O35s securing an impressive runners-up finish and a place among the top two teams in the country.

Mrs Mason-McLeod said: “The support on the day was incredible, with many travelling to cheer the team on. It was a proud moment to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring group of players.”
