Senior School Hockey

Last Sunday, 20 students made the trip to Derby, England, for one of the most exciting days on the indoor hockey calendar, the Super 6s Finals Day at Derby Arena. This annual event brings together the top four teams from both the Men’s and Women’s Premier Divisions for a thrilling conclusion to the indoor season and was held on 1 February 2026 at the Arena.

The schedule was packed, with semi-final showdowns leading into the finals later in the afternoon. Starting with the women’s semi-finals and culminating in the men’s final and the trophy presentations, the action hardly let up. Indoor hockey’s fast pace and close-quarters skill made every match compelling, with impressive athleticism and tactical play on display throughout.

One of the highlights of the day went well beyond hockey itself. Between matches there was plenty to keep spectators entertained, from mini have-a-go sessions, autograph and photo opportunities with England players, to a good range of food and drink options. Adding to the experience was the chance to watch cycling action on the velodrome track above the hockey, which made the visit even more memorable. A particular highlight was the chance to meet one of the players, Old Bedfordian Charlie Axford of Oxted, who is the brother of BGS alumnae Maddie (2021), a GB hockey player, and Kate (2017), a GB long distance runner.

We hope to make this an annual trip going forward.
