Rowers Go the Distance

Whole School Rowing

By Mrs Durrant (Director of Rowing)

Over the last weekend in January, our rowers took on one of the club’s most demanding challenges- the 24-hour row on the ergo.

Fundraising for new blades, the challenge started on  Friday 30th January and ran through to Saturday 31st January.

Beyond the physical challenge, the event offered a brilliant opportunity for rowers from across year groups to work together, build new friendships, and create competitiveness as a team. Throughout the 24 hours, two ergos were kept running, with groups of rowers taking responsibility for one ergo at a time in one hour shifts, followed by some rest before their next slot.

There was never a dull moment. Rowers were kept entertained with films, games and plenty of snacks. Thanks to the incredible support of the Friends of BGS Rowing Club (FBGSRC), for providing the all-important pizza party, the coaching team for staying up way past their own bedtimes and to all the girls who took part.

Captain of Boats, Bella Moretto said: “I always enjoy this event and especially it being my last, it was great to see so many of the younger year groups get involved and wish them luck with it for the next couple of years.”

Vice Captain of Boats Lauren Fraser said: “24 hours is a long time, especially when I only had one and a half hours sleep! Even when groups weren't rowing, they provided such a good atmosphere to keep the event buzzing!”

Team BGS completed an impressive 584,784m, which is roughly the length of England. This remarkable achievement was both a physical and mental test, and we are delighted that the fundraising total now stands at £1950.

If you are a current rowing parent and would like to join FBGSRC, please do get in touch. Donations towards the 24-Hour Ergo Challenge are also still very welcome here.

On behalf of our rowers and the entire coaching team, we would like to thank all parents, friends, and staff for their continued support of the Rowing Club this season.
