By Mrs Inkson (Head of Year 6)
Last week, we were delighted to welcome Dr Kenny, a parent of one of our Year 6 pupils, who visited to share her experiences as a cardiologist. This talk linked perfectly with our current Unit of Inquiry on the history of medicine and how medical advancements have shaped society.
Dr Kenny explained the incredible technology she uses every day to diagnose and treat heart conditions. We learned how to use a stethoscope correctly, listening carefully for heartbeats just like real doctors! One of the most exciting parts of the session was trying out a bronchoscopy simulator. This is a specialist piece of equipment used to train medical students to examine airways and lungs safely. Instead of practising on real patients, students use this simulator to develop their skills and confidence before working in hospitals.
The visit brought all our classroom learning to life and gave us the chance to ask lots of questions about modern medicine and careers in healthcare. Judging by the enthusiasm in the room, we may have inspired some future doctors and healthcare workers among our Year 6 pupils!
