Our Year 6 girls enjoyed a visit to the London Science Museum on Monday, bringing to life many of the topics they have been exploring in class. The day began with excitement on the coach, filled with chatter, laughter and singing that made the journey part of the adventure.
At the museum, the girls were drawn to the galleries on the history of medicine. Having previously seen some of these artefacts in Virtual Reality sessions at school, viewing them in person added a new sense of wonder. Historic surgical tools, early stethoscopes and pioneering medical kits became vivid and meaningful up close.
The early X-ray machines proved a particular highlight, showing how this discovery transformed doctors’ ability to diagnose illnesses. Another favourite explored treatments for illness and epidemics across history. Displays of potions, herbal remedies and the shift from superstition to scientific medicine encouraged thoughtful connections with their studies of World War One poetry. The exhibit on trench medicine, complete with field dressings and examples of urgent innovation, helped the girls visualise the realities faced by soldiers and deepened their understanding of the poetry.
The visit also sparked discussions about periods of rapid growth, helping the girls explore chronology and see how quickly scientific knowledge can advance.
