By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 5)

As part of our transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry Where We Are in Place and Time, Year 5 students have been exploring how we represent the world around us, including through art. A recent session focused on one of the building blocks of artistic expression: colour mixing.

The girls investigated how primary colours can be combined to create secondary and tertiary colours, building their own colour wheels and testing combinations to discover unexpected results. This hands-on lesson sparked some brilliant curiosity with questions such as “How was colour invented?” and “Why are there only three base colours?” prompting rich discussion and deeper thinking.

This activity laid the foundation for more detailed landscape work later in the unit and helped the students understand that even something as simple as mixing paint involves a powerful blend of science, creativity, and observation.
