Last week, 41 enthusiastic Year 7 students and five members of staff embarked on an exciting three-day visit to the Opal Coast in northern France. The trip offered a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in both the language and culture of our nearest continental neighbour.
After crossing the Channel on Le Shuttle, our first stop was a visit to a local chocolate producer. We watched a fascinating demonstration showing how the chocolate is made, and we sampled the delicious treats and enjoyed browsing the shop.
We stayed at the beautiful Château du Broutel, where we enjoyed team games in the extensive grounds after our first evening meal.
Saturday was packed with French experiences. At a traditional sweet shop in Berck-sur-Mer, pupils had the chance to make their own lollipops and, of course, enjoy some of the sweets on offer. We went to the beautiful sandy beach and many played Pétanque. Later, in Boulogne, after exploring the charming Old Town, students put their classroom learning into practice by role-playing a visit to an ice cream parlour - this time with real French speakers! During some free time, pupils either explored the local shops or relaxed in cafés, ordering drinks in French.
That evening, the group gathered around a campfire for games and toasted marshmallows which was a perfect way to end a busy day.
On our final morning, we visited the bustling market in the town of Rue. Students were challenged to buy strawberries using their French. Our final stop was a French supermarket, an opportunity to pick up pastries and souvenirs before returning to the Château for a final lunch.
We returned to England having sampled French food, visited three different towns, listened to and spoken plenty of French, and most importantly, created lasting memories with friends.
Below are some comments from the students:
“I really enjoyed this trip and the chance to use my French to buy things on the market and a delicious ice cream!”
“I loved playing on the beach with my friends.”
“I improved my French and became more confident speaking to people.”
“Best trip ever”
“I loved it!”
