Diversity and Inclusion Community

On Friday 16th May, the Diversity and Inclusion team organised a vibrant Cultural Dress Up Day event.

The school community were encouraged to wear something that best represented their culture or identity, whether it was a representation of where they are from or something they are passionate about. They took part in a fashion show in the Assembly Hall at lunchtime, which featured incredible outfits and some fantastic dance moves!

Isla Campbell (Diversity and Inclusion Captain) reflected on the event: “As the new Diversity and Inclusion team, the Cultural Dress Up Day was an exciting way to start our roles with a bang! The vibrant atmosphere of the day was great to see, and it was even better to watch everyone boldly representing all of the different cultures and heritages present in our diverse BGS community. Last year’s lunchtime fashion show was an unforgettable and well organised event, and we wanted nothing less for this year’s celebration. The fashion show proved to be a brilliant display of the progressive culture present at BGS, and it was rewarding to watch both students and staff proudly celebrating their peers’ backgrounds as well as their own.”

Aathmika Kiritharan (Diversity and Inclusion Prefect) added: “Following the successful debut of the cultural fashion show at BGS last year, there was some uncertainty as to whether we could replicate the same level of enthusiasm and engagement. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming number of students who participated, each proudly showcasing their stunning traditional attire on the runway. What a moving experience it was to witness such pride in cultural identity each of the girls showed, as well as the genuine appreciation shown by the audience. I feel honoured to have taken part in this year’s event as part of the new Diversity and Inclusion team, and I look forward to the cultural dance performances ready for our next fashion show in June at the Cultural Festival.”

Rihana Sultana (Diversity and Inclusion Prefect) commented: “Cultural Dress Up Day is an opportunity to display your culture and identity, which was best shown by the fashion parade that took place in the assembly hall at lunch. This year, the show had an incredible turnout, with many students from all years and teachers participating in the show. This show was the core of BGS’s values: to be bold, imaginative and reflective. Many people found the courage to go on stage and perform in front of a large audience, many people expressed their creativity in the form of their dance and exquisite cultural wear and many people acted with integrity and kindness in respect to their peers when everyone applauded for each other, learning about the different cultural perspectives. Culture day 2025 was a major success and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone that took part.”

Aakriti Jain (Diversity and Inclusion Prefect) said: “Cultural Dress up Day has always been a highlight of the year, and being able to organise and provide a platform for both students and staff to represent their roots and heritage was an incredible opportunity. Seeing so many people turn up to go on stage or just to support their friends was really rewarding, and it was a great way for different year groups to come together. The whole crowd was amazing, and overall everyone came together to create a fantastic atmosphere.”
