By Mrs Horton (Drama Teacher)

Last week, the Studio Theatre at BGS was transformed into a bustling hub of excitement and talent as our Years 9 and 10 students took to the stage for four unforgettable performances of High School Musical.

Under the direction of our Drama and Music Departments, the cast and crew poured their hearts and souls into bringing this beloved musical to life. Months of rehearsals, late-night set construction sessions and rigorous singing and dancing practice (have you ever tried to dance whilst bouncing a basketball?!) culminated in a performance that exceeded all expectations.

The lead roles were portrayed by our talented students, Tami Oginni and Elsie Butler and Georgia Wiltshire and Vaieshya Vageesan each bringing their own unique flair to the iconic characters of Troy and Gabriella. Sharpay and Ryan beautifully interpreted by Imogen Blower and Meg Miles and Olivia Danks and Amber-Lilli McCarthy. Their chemistry on stage was noticeable, captivating the audience and enhancing the storyline scene by scene. However, it wasn't just the leads who shone. Every member of the ensemble, from the Wildcats to the Brainiacs, brought their A-game, delivering powerhouse vocals and dynamic dance numbers that had the audience cheering for more.

Let's not forget the contribution of our student band; led by our Music Department, the musicians spent countless hours perfecting the iconic songs of High School Musical. Their live performance brought an electrifying energy to the stage, elevating the entire production to new heights.

Behind the scenes, the theatre crew worked tirelessly to ensure that every lighting cue was perfect, every sound effect seamless and every set piece in its rightful place. Their efforts were instrumental in creating the immersive atmosphere that transported the audience straight to East High.

Imogen Blower said: “It reminded me of what the theatre is supposed to feel like. The number of friends I made is so inspiring and this whole process furthered my passion for musical theatre. It’s safe to say that this is by far one of the most thrilling and best experiences of theatre in my life so far.”

Tami Oginni added “I really enjoyed taking part and performing in the High School Musical production, it was a very fun and enjoyable experience and pushed me out of my comfort zone. It also helped me to create some new friendships in our year and the year below by doing the show together.”

As the final curtain fell and the cast took their well-deserved bows, it was clear that this production of High School Musical had left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. The cheers and applause echoed through the auditorium, a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved.

Mr Stratton (Director of Drama and Dance) reflected: “It was absolutely wonderful to see 40 students from across Years 9 and 10 taking up the challenge of producing High School Musical in roles that encompassed performers, musicians and theatre crew. Not only was the final outcome a triumph, the process and the memories will be a lasting learning opportunity.”

In the words of Troy Bolton himself, "We're all in this together," and together, we have created something truly magical.
