Last week, our Lower Sixth Drama students presented their devising performance assessment for the Edexcel A Level in Drama and Theatre. Inspired by an extract from Things I Know to be True by Andrew Bovell and influenced by the physical and collaborative techniques of Frantic Assembly, the group created an original piece of theatre that was both bold and visually striking.
The performance tackled mature and emotionally intense themes, including family dynamics, abuse, guilt and, ultimately, murder. Through their dedication to storytelling and physical theatre, the students delivered a powerful and thought-provoking piece that held the audience’s attention.
Kaia, Jemima, Chloe and Polly each gave compelling performances, developing nuanced characters who carried the emotional weight of the story with sensitivity and depth. Their skill in balancing physicality with psychological realism showed a strong understanding of the source material and the practitioner’s methods.
Laura’s costume designs added an extra layer to the production. Her careful attention to detail and considered choices supported characterisation and helped convey the key themes central to the narrative.
The group’s use of Frantic Assembly’s techniques was clear in the fluid transitions and carefully choreographed sequences that supported the storytelling. The final result was a polished and cohesive piece of theatre that demonstrated creativity, technical skill and maturity.
Polly reflected: “It was a really intense process, but I loved exploring how we could use movement to express emotion and build tension. It pushed me creatively.”
Jemima added: “This project helped me to grow in confidence, especially in developing character and working as an ensemble. I’m really proud of what we achieved together.”
Well done to all involved, we look forward to seeing where your creativity leads next.
