By Mr Stratton (Director of Drama and Dance)
Last week, over 150 audience members filled the Black Box Theatre to enjoy a magical evening and matinee of performance, as our brilliant Year 7 and 8 students brought The Worst Witch to life in a warm and engaging production.
Based on Jill Murphy’s much-loved story, the performance celebrated individuality, quiet courage and doing the right thing, even when it feels difficult.
The young cast transported the audience to Miss Cackle’s Academy with energy, humour and imagination. From the misadventures of Mildred Hubble to the stern presence of Miss Hardbroom, every character was confidently brought to life. The students approached their roles with creativity and focus, showing not only their performance skills but also their growing confidence and collaborative spirit.
Rehearsals took place across several weeks, giving students the opportunity to work together, try new ideas and grow as performers. Their commitment was clear in every scene, every line and every well-timed moment of comedy.
Audience feedback was full of praise for the students’ energy, characterisation and the overall standard of the production. Parents, friends, staff and fellow students left with smiles on their faces, a reflection of the cast’s ability to connect and entertain.
Productions like this rely on much more than what’s seen on stage. Thank you to Mr Page, Director of Music, whose musical direction and enthusiasm played a key role in the production’s success, as did his delightful cameo as the Academy’s musician. Miss Dawson led the way with lighting, sound and set design, creating the magical world we saw unfold. Thanks also go to Mrs Jennings for her detailed work on costumes and props, helping to shape the look and feel of the performance.
To our brilliant cast, thank you for your spirit, humour and commitment. You brought Miss Cackle’s Academy to life and left a lasting impression on all who came to watch.
