Big Bang Junior Engineering winner, Serena Jacob (Year 10), was thrilled to finally receive her trophy and certificate in assembly.

In 2021, Serena created an app to prevent or potentially even treat Type 2 Diabetes. The project entitled DM2.Prevent, targets reversible risk factors for the disease and provides ways to reduce those risks.

Serena undertook extensive research and received advice and support from former BGS parent, Mrs Charlotte Lucas, during the course of the year via video conferencing. Mrs Lucas is a pharmacist and researcher with a specialty in Type 2 Diabetes prevention.

Serena said: “I was delighted to be awarded the Big Bang Junior Engineering 2021 trophy and certificate! My project was to devise an interactive app which aims to recognise and reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Since I won this prize, I have been learning how to code apps with the Swift programming language, using online resources. I plan to develop the skills I have learnt to create the fully-fledged app, DM2.Prevent.”
