From Monday 11th to Thursday 14th May 2026, our Lower Sixth geographers took part in an inspiring four-day residential fieldwork experience in the coastal town of Southwold, Suffolk, where A Level and IB students gathered essential primary data for their Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) and Internal Assessment (IA).
Based at the Darsham Country Centre, students worked alongside the expert team from the Geography Fieldwork Academy, developing their independent enquiry skills and applying geographical theory in the field.
Across the four days, students investigated a range of human and physical geography themes, from coastal processes and beach morphology to the growing impact of second homes on local communities.
Using digital tools including ArcGIS Survey123, students designed their own questionnaires, carried out interviews with local residents, and watched their data geolocate instantly back in the classroom. There was even the opportunity to capture aerial imagery using drone technology, adding another layer of analysis to their investigations.
The trip combined rigorous academic fieldwork with memorable experiences, including evenings exploring the harbour, enjoying fish and chips by the coast, and a little friendly competition back at the centre. It was a fantastic few days of learning in the outdoor classroom, and our students demonstrated excellent resilience, curiosity and professionalism throughout.
We now look forward to seeing their fieldwork come to life in their final NEA and IA coursework.
