Whole School English

By Mrs Everitt (English Teacher)

On Tuesday, the Year 8s visited Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon. A beautiful and historical riverside town, it afforded us the opportunity to experience a guided walk; to visit the actual school - which is largely unchanged, where Shakespeare studied from age 7 to 14; and to visit Stratford Butterfly Farm.

Aanya S (Year 8) commented: “My favourite thing about the Stratford Upon Avon trip was the tour around the town. It was my favourite because I liked learning about the history of the town and buildings and seeing all of the old Shakespearean houses.”

Indeed, we were able to see Shakespeare’s birthplace, and the site of New Place, the second largest house in Stratford where Shakespeare lived towards the end of his life. We learned so much history as well, about where the mother of John Harvard (of Harvard University) lived, and about Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried.

Ruby R (Year 8) said that she was surprised that no one had investigated Shakespeare’s remains, despite the fact that someone had apparently stolen his skull. She said: “I thought it was quite interesting to see that no one has been tempted to as this is quite an important bit of history!”

For many, their favourite part of the trip was visiting Shakespeare’s Schoolroom, where a guide gave a fascinating talk about the school, and students had a lesson with Master Thomas Jenkin. For Mia T, one interesting aspect of her visit here was that the boys (for they were all boys) didn’t have exams, and that you would learn by teaching people who were younger than you instead of being tested on what you had learned. Others really enjoyed writing with quills, and attempting to copy Shakespeare’s handwriting.

The Butterfly Farm was also a popular destination. Gabi C (Year 8) said: “I learned that there are over 500 different types of butterflies in the room. It was such a nice place, and I would love to go again. This trip has definitely been a highlight of my year!”
