Whole School Rowing

By Mr McEwen (Assistant Head Rowing Coach)

On Saturday 6th June, BGS Rowing Club delivered exceptional performances at the Star Regatta, securing six category wins and reaching 11 finals from 14 entries, underlining their dominance on the water. The event is a two-boat, side-by-side race over a 1200m course on our home river, the Great Ouse.

While a number of crews across the regatta had to withdraw, particularly in the smaller boat classes, this resulted in a few early byes for BGS. As the day progressed, racing picked up pace and even the constant rain showers couldn’t dampen spirits.

Some highlights of the racing included; A couple of close BGS v BGS match ups in the WJ15 1x with one race coming down to just a canvas (1.5m). There were more close results in the bigger boats with both the W 4+ and WJ15 4x+ winning their finals by just ½ a length after tight racing all the way down the track. Our WJ17 2x, WJ16 4+ & WJ15 8+ however, had dominant wins in finals over their competition showing great composure and execution to do so. Overall, out of 14 categories entered; 11 crews made their finals, with six coming away with wins.

Once again, the support from the friends and families of our rowers was exceptional, and their cheers very much helped our crews get over the line. We now look forward to the next race for our J14 & J15 squads, Peterborough Junior Championships on Saturday 27th June.
