Whole School Geography

By Mrs Swan (Head of Geography)

On the morning of Tuesday 28th April, Year 9 students presented their Sustainability in Food pitches to a panel of six judges. Since the latter half of the Spring term, Year 9 Geographers have been working on designing solutions to make the food production system, from production to consumption, more sustainable, as part of their Resource Management unit.

Each group had 10 minutes to pitch their idea, ranging from innovative apps to reduce food waste, to alternatives to soya-based animal feeds, and Sprutan, a low-cost technological solution designed to improve water conservation in farming. There was a real buzz in the room, with lots of engagement and some genuinely impressive thinking on show.

The judges -  including our Headmistress, Mrs Gibson, Chair of Governors, Fleur Bassett (Surgeon Rear Admiral Fleur Marshall, FRCGP FCIPD KHP), Catering Manager, Mrs Tombs, local farmers and scientists, and Mrs Dorothy Whiteley (former Head of Geography), were hugely impressed. They also challenged students to think more deeply about the practicalities and scalability of their ideas, helping to push their thinking even further.

This project forms part of the GCSE Geography course and builds on the Resource Management topic studied this year. A big thank you to all our judges for giving up their time to support the students.

Well done to Year 9, a fantastic effort all round!
