By Mr McEwen (Assistant Head Rowing Coach)
On Sunday 12th October, the BGS Rowing Club took on our first race of the new season, Bedford Autumn Small Boats Head.
This event is held on our home river, the Great Ouse, and raced in a time trial format over a 1900m course. Over the afternoon 53 students from Years 10 to Upper Sixth competed in 24 crews across 12 categories.
We were blessed with some lovely calm conditions which enabled all crews to deliver strong performances out on the water. Our senior pairs enjoyed some close racing, finishing the course side by side with each other, really exemplifying the brilliant display of steering we saw from all the coxless boats. The J15 doubles were very evenly matched and after a cat and mouse race finished with times within two seconds of each other.
BGS finished the event with three 3rd places, six 2nd places, and two excellent wins for our W 4- and WJ16 4+ who both blew away their competition by over 10 seconds.
A huge thanks to the Friends of BGSBC and all of the parents who came to watch for their loud support for crews from the bank.
We now shift our focus to our next two races after half term, Junior 4s Head and Star Autumn Head on the 14th and 16th of November respectively.
