In this half term’s Cinéfilles film discussion group our Sixth Form French students had chosen to watch Coco avant Chanel, a biopic about the life of the iconic French fashion designer.
We discussed, amongst other things, why the original film poster might have been banned from public spaces in France, how effective the trailer was, the awards we would have nominated the film for, in this case best actress and best costumes, as well as what we thought about the film’s length, themes and our favourite characters. We all agreed we would give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If anyone else within the BGS community, particularly students of French in Chanel, have been inspired to watch the film on Planet eStream.
Amelia Hudson (Upper Sixth) added: “The film Coco avant Chanel which I watched in preparation for Cinéfilles (French film club), inspired my IRP topic with its representation of Chanel’s early life and legacy. With criticisms that have recently come to light about her, I then decided to focus on the topic of whether it is possible to dissociate her legacy from her Nazi affiliations during the Occupation in France.”
