Sixth Form Business and Economics

By Mrs Simms (Business and Economics)

This term, our Lower Sixth A Level Business students spent a few lessons applying their classroom learning to a real-world scenario, investigating the financial viability of running grassroots music events.

Using our new computer suite, students collaborated on a finance project to bring business theory into practice. They explored whether hosting music gigs could be profitable by building professional-level financial models using Excel. Their tasks included creating a cash flow forecast, break-even analysis, and statement of comprehensive income, all based on industry-relevant data.

The project helped them gain practical skills that go beyond the curriculum: mastering Excel etiquette and basic formulas, students developed a deeper understanding of how businesses operate in competitive markets.

With the ability to link financial decisions to real outcomes, they considered what changes could make their business more profitable - whether adjusting ticket prices, managing costs more efficiently, or refining their marketing strategy.

Working in the IT suite helped develop their technical skills but also fostered a sense of professionalism and collaboration, enhancing students’ employability.
