At BGS, the tradition of Ramadan and the joyous celebrations of Eid hold great significance. During Ramadan, many Muslims around the world observe fasting from dawn until sunset.
When the fast is broken, families and communities come together for Iftar, a special meal enjoyed with a variety of delicious dishes.
Members of our school community came together for a memorable BGS Iftar on Wednesday 11th March. Organised by the Islamic Society, with food provided by parents and the Green’s Kitchen team, the event brought everyone together in the Dining Hall, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere to celebrate the breaking of the fast.
The evening began with recitals, followed by students and a visiting Imam sharing their thoughts on Ramadan and the significance of Iftar. They spoke about how Ramadan is a time not only for fasting but also for reflection, self-discipline and giving to others.
The Islamic Society reflected: “We are incredibly grateful to the school for supporting student-led initiatives like this, which allow us to share our faith and traditions with the wider community. It was a joy to see everyone come together to breakfast, and we hope this event continues to be a cornerstone of our school's calendar for years to come.”
Safa (Year 11) added: “Reflecting on my third year of being involved in the Iftar, it’s been incredible to watch this event grow. I loved working with the Sixth Form team to set up the hall and felt honoured to recite my poem and Quran recitation for everyone.
“The turnout this year was fantastic, and it was especially lovely to see such a diverse group and so many new faces. Having our friends and family there made it even more special, truly bringing the whole community together. I’m so grateful the school gives us the space and support to host events like this - it’s been a real highlight, and I can’t wait for next year!”
Mr Gracie (Deputy Head - Student Engagement and Welfare) reflected: “The Iftar evening was a wonderful, shared time with students, staff and families. The BGS community is a privilege to be a part of, and it is exemplified so well this evening. It is a student organised event and the girls from Years 8 to Upper Sixth did a very impressive job of preparing decorations, arranging the room and putting together a schedule. The food brought by families was also fantastic and greatly appreciated by all who attended. It is not easy to organise an event like this or speak in front of others and Imam Kamran, who led the prayers, recognised the excellent recitations and creativity of the presentations and poetry in the evening. We are already looking forward to next year!
Mrs Tombs (Catering Manager) said: “For us as a catering team, food is all about connection. Being able to showcase the different ways food is shared across cultures is really exciting, and the Iftar was a lovely moment where the whole school community could come together and experience that. It’s always a lovely experience to see the pride our students have in showcasing their cuisine and traditions with their peers”
We wish Ramadan Mubarak to you all.
