On Thursday 20th November, a group of year 10 students were invited to St Francis’ College for a debate competition against two other schools. The students were asked to prepare four topics all involving current issues in society. The topics were:
1. Social media activism does more harm than good for real-world progress.
2. The use of artificial intelligence in education will widen, not close, the education gap.
3. Cancel culture does more to silence debate than to promote accountability.
4. Climate change action should prioritise lifestyle change over technological innovation.
There was some excellent debating on show, with both BGS teams presenting thoughtful arguments. The competition was fierce and sadly none of our teams made it to the final round. However, all seven BGS students who took part (Sylvia, Ayesha, Phoebe, Millen, Alena, Elaina and Sarrinah) showed brilliant teamwork and a great ability to think on their feet throughout the day, with Phoebe and Millen receiving special commendation from the judges. We’re proud of all who took part and hope they get involved in future debate opportunities!
