Senior School Diversity and Inclusion

By Mrs Horton (Drama Teacher)

At the end of last term, Year 7 students took part in an inspiring Religious Studies project exploring the diversity of world religions. Over several weeks, they worked in groups to research one of five major religions: Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam, Judaism or Hinduism. The project culminated in an exhibition-style assessment that brought learning to life and showcased the depth of understanding students had gained.

Each group explored the key features of their chosen religion, from core beliefs, practices and festivals to places of worship and sacred stories. They also reflected on what it means to be part of a religion, considering how faith can shape identity, daily life, values and community. This approach encouraged learning that went beyond facts, fostering real understanding and empathy.

The World Religions Market Place transformed the classroom into a lively exhibition. Groups presented their findings through slide shows, posters, interactive quizzes, games, artefacts, music, dance and even cultural food, carefully prepared and clearly labelled. Half the group acted as presenters, confidently sharing their knowledge and answering questions, while the other half visited different stalls. Students then swapped roles, ensuring everyone experienced both teaching and learning.

The atmosphere throughout the exhibition was one of curiosity, respect and enthusiasm. Year 7 students should be very proud of the maturity they demonstrated when engaging with beliefs and practices that may be different from their own. The project not only deepened their knowledge but also highlighted the value of understanding and celebrating diversity.
