In May 2025 the Girls’ School Association (GSA) launched a pilot research project, as part of the GSA Student Research Association, providing Y7 into Year 8 pupils with the opportunity to explore research skills and important topics with fellow Girls’ School students. Topics centred around female equality, the environment and mental health.

BGS, in addition to five other state and independent girls’ schools, were invited to participate in this pilot scheme. BGS was paired with The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, a comprehensive school in Ealing, London.

Six Year 7 students were selected from each school, in the case of BGS our group consisted of the following participants: Abhinaya Sivakumar, Ayla Akhtar, Beatrice Burchmore, Harriet Muchmore, Joelle Hall and Zoë Vadher. Students were supported by Mrs Baker (Challenge and Extend) Mrs Tyrrell-Johnson (LRC Manager and EPQ mentor) overseen by Mr Gardener (Senior Deputy Head).

BGS and EWS students worked across schools to create a research question, investigate the topic, produce research questionnaires and finally produce a report and presentation. The final report ‘What factors attribute to young youth team female players in their decision to not continue playing amateur football?’, along with additional reports can be read on the GSA website here.

The project was completed this month and concluded with a presentation by each school to the GSA Student Research Association.

Abhinaya (Year 7) said: “I really enjoyed participating in the GSA student research project. We explored many different data gathering methods and acquired a variety of important research skills for the future. My favourite part was listening to everyone’s ideas and reflecting on what others thought about the process as well as having the opportunity to develop my communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills. I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to be a part of this experience.”

Mrs Tyrrell-Johnson added: “Taking part in the first of what promises to be an annual event by the GSA was a real privilege. The students have all gained new skills as a result of this experience, including how to conduct meetings, overcoming communication barriers, referencing and conducting primary research. It has been a privilege to mentor them and we are extremely proud of their team performance and individual dedication.”
