Sixth Form Business and Economics

By Mrs Simms (Business and Economics Teacher)

Our Lower Sixth A-Level Business and IB Computer Science students had an inspiring visit to the Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Dunstable on Wednesday 25th June. This trip offered a real-world glimpse into one of the world’s most advanced and efficient business operations.

Students were fascinated by Amazon’s cutting-edge robotics, which move stock across the enormous facility with impressive precision. They explored how products are stocked, picked, packed, and shipped, gaining first-hand insight into logistics, supply chain management, and automation.

The visit also brought key business theory to life. We learned about Amazon’s leadership styles, its strong corporate culture, and the creative ways the company motivates and supports employees, from offering private healthcare and 95% funding for further study to employee recognition schemes and rewards for innovative ideas that improve efficiency.

It was a valuable experience that bridged the gap between classroom learning and real-world business practice and left many of our students inspired about their future careers in business and technology.

Emily Feiger (Lower Sixth) said: “It was a very interactive and engaging experience. The tour guide, Silwia, has worked there for 15 years, which was useful as she was able to go into detail about each aspect of the packaging process. This trip linked well to the topics we are currently learning, such as SWOT analysis, lean production, types of workforces and motivators.”
