To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, First Sea Lord Cadet Emily Borner (Year 11) attended a special tea party at Downing Street on Monday 5th May to commemorate the occasion. She was accompanied by CPOC Mitali Misra (Lower Sixth) and POC Tom from Bedford School.
Emily reflected about the day: “Being invited to a VE Day 80 Street Party at 10 Downing Street is something I never imagined I’d be able to say at sixteen – and yet, there I was, standing in one of the most iconic places in the country, representing the First Sea Lord Cadets and the wider Royal Navy Cadet Forces. It was a moment I will never forget.
“The atmosphere was amazing with Union Jack bunting, live music, and a crowd full of energy and pride. There was a sense of national celebration, and it was incredible to be surrounded by so many inspiring people, including veterans from the Second World War, youth groups from across the UK, and serving members of the Armed Forces. It was a time to reflect, honour, and celebrate those who served.
“One of the highlights of the day for me was speaking to a group of Royal Navy Submariners. They were incredibly open about their careers and the challenges and opportunities that come with life beneath the waves. I found it all fascinating; from what daily life is like on board a submarine to how a close-knit family they become. They were so passionate about what they do, and it really opened my eyes to a part of the Royal Navy I didn’t know much about. As a surprise, they presented me with a set of Royal Navy Dolphins – a prestigious badge earned by completing the demanding submariner training course. Although I haven’t earned them through service myself, I felt truly honoured to be given them and will treasure them forever.
“It was also surreal to get that iconic photo outside the famous door of Number 10!
“Overall, it was a huge privilege to be part of such a special event, not just as a cadet, but as a young person witnessing history and meeting those who’ve shaped it. I’m so proud to have represented the CCF and the First Sea Lord Cadets, and I’ll carry the memories of that day with me for a long time to come.”
As part of her role as a First Sea Lord Cadet, Emily will represent the Sea Cadets at a number of high-profile national events throughout the year, supporting ceremonial duties and meeting with senior Royal Navy personnel and dignitaries.
