Trips and Excursions

On Thursday 11th September, our Year 10 students embarked on a thrilling three-day, two-night fun filled, adrenaline based, outdoor adventure residential to Edale.

For three nights they were based at one of the highest residences in the Peak District, the YHA Edale. The students participated in various risk-taking activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, weaseling, canoeing and caving, which required students to push themselves outside of their comfort zones and support each other to overcome their fears. A great start to Year 10 and teaching them how to rise to any challenge they may face.

Olivia Deverill (Year 10) reflected: “Edale was a real adventure. My favourite activity was the weaselling followed by the abseiling down the bridge. I was bold and took a lot of risks in abseiling down the bridge and rock climbing as there were some really steep and small rocks with very little room to grab onto anything.

“I fell a few times but trusted the instructors to catch me, and they did. I liked that me and my friends got to go on a minibus there and back too! We were all in a room together which was very comforting to me because I was worried with who I was put with. Despite a few challenges, I pulled through and completed every task with a proud mindset afterwards. I wish the school trips were more like this one, it was a great start to Year 10!”

Mrs Lonsdale (Sixth Form Pastoral Officer) commented: “What an adventure, thank you yr 10 girls for having me and of course Edale, the most stunning setting nestled in a breathtaking valley, deep in the Peak District National Park. An incredible time was had by all, including myself.

“I was astounded how quickly each activity group bonded, especially as newly formed tutor groups.  Students fostered genuine trust and support in each other, including our new BGS students who had only been on school grounds for one week prior to trip departure. The YHA staff were so nurturing, instilling confidence in each team member, to push beyond the individual's comfort zones. Outdoor, physical activities certainly offered thrilling experiences: rock climbing , caving, abseiling and weasling to name a few.

“I will always remember the encouragement I was offered by my team players, in particular when I suggested "I may sit this one out"  students would encourage me to face my fears,  "come on Mrs Lonsdale, be bold, you have got this" as we stare into a slither of a rock ravine to then weasel through.  Not forgetting the bravo cheers once I made it out! True 360 degrees pastoral care. An unforgettable trip that hopefully all involved will reflect back in years to come, with fond BGS memories. A trip to certainly look forward to in 2026 Year 9 team, book my space please!”
